Product Description
Trying to push all students into deeper thinking? Need to differentiate for highly capable students? Looking for ways to pull that small guided group?
Recently, I have been frustrated by the choice boards available that seem to focus mostly on “activities” (see my blog on activities at sarahsteachingpointblog.blogspot.com) or various multiple intelligences, but not deeper levels of thinking. Most Choice Boards seem to ask for Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Level 1 Recall/ Reproduce or 2 Application / Use thinking only.
When we assign verbs to DOK or to Bloom’s Taxonomy, that does not automatically push layers of varying depths. Students can CREATE Level 1 / Recall products or they can CREATE Level 4/ Extended thinking products. The verb CREATE does not necessarily show higher level (or deeper) thinking.
The same goes for products. Just like adult teachers, students can write a lesson plan to TEACH about a subject at level 1 or 2 if what they TEACH is recall/ use. However, students can TEACH a level 3 or 4 lesson if what is taught expects their audience to develop strategic thinking or extended thinking.
This product is meant to be used in a classroom with a wide range of skills and abilities. All students can access grade level concepts, some by reading information and jumping to the highest level of thinking, some need scaffolding and guided practice to dig deeper.
BONUS**Using my Rainforest Rubric, you can change the wording for other habitats around the world and both you and the students can practice hearing the DOK language over and over.
At Sarah's Teaching Points store, I sell the products I use in my classroom to make a difference to my teaching. I want to know where each student is and also where each student THINKs they are. Thus the need for both students AND teachers to spend some time reflecting on the student's understanding and how to push thinking by self-selecting products and rubrics.

Please visit my store, Sarah's Teaching Points, for more thoughtful reading, writing, math, RTI, community supports and behavior management products!
