This "Chapter Choice" interactive powerpoint is a choice-oriented, differentiated chart, with checkpoint assignments for every two chapters of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
The chart is divided into 6 chapter columns and one final choice column. Each column addresses two chapters and a theme:
Chapters 1-2(Character Identity)
Chapters 3-4(Multiple Perspectives)
Chapters 5-6(Divided Communities)
Chapters 7-8(Individuality and innocence)
Chapters 11-12(Sacrifice and Empathy)
The rows of the chart are each focused on a specific learning style(Expressive, Logical, Graphic, Musical, and Reflective) and the assignments for each column are separated into these categories.
The idea is that students will choose an assessment from one category for each reading checkpoint. As there are 6 columns and 5 categories, they will have the opportunity to do 2 assignments from their favorite category.
The Powerpoint is set up interactively so that students can look at the chart overview and then click on each assignment to see the directions and requirements. There is a "back to chart" link at the bottom of each description that takes them back to the main page. The interactive Powerpoint reduces the amount of paper that would be used for printing a large-scale choice assignment like this one.
I have gotten a lot of great feedback from my students, and many of the teachers at my school are now using it in their classrooms.
I also have a print version of the chart that I hand out to students, so they can keep track of their choices. We usually keep the completed and in-progress work in folders or portfolios at the front of the room.
