In need of a culture project to do with your students? Wanting to give your students more ownership in the classroom? Take a look at this project.
This project is almost entirely student run, so I typically used it in the second part of the year when our classroom culture was strong. Students are given guidelines (attached sheet) on how to complete project. The idea behind it- students choose something that actually interests them as an individual. Then they research and study that thing in a specific country. I've done Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico, Cuba and Spain with my students; however this would work with pretty much any country! Once they have completed their research, they write an essay to show the teacher what they've learned. Once the essay is completed, students create something to share the information with the class (ideas include powerpoint, poster, food, etc). On the final day of the project, students share their research with the class so students can learn from each other.
I typically give 1 day for picking the topic & research, another day to finish research and write the essay. Then students have 1 or 2 days to create their products (or for slower students to finish the essay). The final day is when classmates share with each other!
