Description

Turn your students into published writers! Support them through the entire writing process with renewed enthusiasm as they draft, revise, and submit original writing to a contest of their choice.

Affectionately called “Project Publish” for short…

• This project experience is highly flexible, from the editable documents to the parameters you set for the project and how you choose to implement it.

• Originally designed for a very talented class of 8th graders, this project can EASILY prepare students to submit their writing to contests around the world that accept the work of middle school and high school students.

• Though I have envisioned it to occur in a three-week span, it can easily be condensed or expanded, and this project could be run in the background in conjunction with other units or learning routines in your curriculum.

The project is simple: students choose one contest or external audience to whom they wish to write, research and analyze that genre, and then move through the whole writing process in order to prepare a competitive, “publication-ready” draft. All student work is fairly assessed with one common rubric, and then the student can choose whether or not to ACTUALLY submit their work to their chosen audience (this step is not required).

This 11+ page download includes:

• Overview pages with step-by-step directions

• Project proposal form, a teacher and parent permission slip in disguise

• Project checklist, with due dates and a sample calendar

• Genre research activity: students find and analyze mentor texts to imitate

• Brainstorming activity: preplanning some of the basics

• Giving & Receiving feedback form: structure peer and adult collaboration

• Project rubric: editable and genre-neutral, using CCSS Writing standards, to fairly assess all students’ writing regardless of the genre or contest that they choose!

• Final self-assessment: Gather student opinions and help them reflect on their growth

• PDF copies in addition to the editable Word files

• Teacher Tips page: ideas for scaffolding, implementation, and challenging your students to help you differentiate and/or customize the experience for your class!
