This lesson utilizes the textbook Bits and Pieces I: Understanding Fractions, Decimals, and Percents; by Lappan, Fey, Fitzgerald, Friel, & Phillips (2006).

This lesson incorporates technology in the form of utilizing a virtural manipulative available online.

This lesson improves student skill in fractions, decimals, percentages, long division, reasoning, problem solving, and communication. Students have an opportunity to explore possible methods on their own – utilizing student voice to develop student-invented algorithms. It uses a real-world scenario in which utilizing percents to compare is an appropriate methodology. The lesson builds upon previous lessons in fractions and decimals. The lesson plan includes family involvement. The lesson covers material identified as standards at both the state and national level.
