This 8-page lesson packet covers the easily mixed up operations of multiplication and addition.
We know that choosing the operation for word problems is one of the hardest things to master in fourth grade. So why throw all 4 operations at kids all at once? Better to focus on two operations at a time so kids can focus on the subtle differences between them. In this lesson students explore the difference between addition (combining groups) and multiplication (repeated groups of the same amount). Why can both problems say "in all" or "altogether"? How can I tell the difference? How can I model what is happening in my problem?
For each problem students are asked to:
⇒Draw a model (the step where they determine the operation)
⇒Estimate the answer
⇒Answer in a complete sentence
Each word problem in this lesson has 2 two-digit numbers. This is done intentionally so students don't rely on the size of the numbers to tell them the operation. Make sure your students have mastered 2 x 2 digit multiplication before attempting this lesson.
