This product was inspired by the words of the great American writer, Mark Twain: “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter— it’s the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”

Many of our students need support in the use of word choice and understanding subtle differences in word meanings. Our language includes many words that are easy to confuse or misuse and word choice can alter the meaning of a message. This product was designed primarily for middle and high school students and will give them a deeper understanding of word meanings, bring a greater awareness of the importance of using the correct word in order to deliver a clear message, and help them know when not to use “lightning bug” when we really mean “lightning!”
Included in this product:
One poster of the famous Twain expression to display.
One question sheet to address comprehension and critical thinking related to the quote’s meaning.
This game includes 48 word pair cards and 48 definition cards. Many are considered homophones (sound the same but have different meanings and spellings) others are commonly substituted/confused words.
Make your own lightning bug sentences sheet: Use this during/after learning the words and definitions to help further your student’s knowledge and use of the vocabulary.
Sentence Examples: This product includes 96 original sentence examples. Read the sentence aloud in order to provide an example of how to use the word correctly in context or ask student to choose the correct answer.
Date Collections sheets: For each word, assess student’s understanding and progress by using the rating scale and +/- system . A blank data sheet is also included.
Game pieces: lightning bugs, lightning bolts and jars.
