• introduction, review, or identification of chords for compositional use and/or assessment
• chord progression idea generator (major, minor, and some dominant 7th chords)
• print or on screen use
This activity provides visuals for introducing chords. Copy the required chords to promote student inquiry using formal instruction (e.g., chord structure I, IV, V, I - C, F, G, and C) or inquiry-based with tablet keyboards, guitar or apps that can easily play chords.
Introduce chord structures with well-known songs which allow the students to ‘hear’ the usual chord sequences. As they become familiar with the basic chords of I, IV, and V, they will soon realize that many traditional songs are built on these three chords. Build a class list of songs that follow this and other structures. Encourage the students to listen to their own favourite music for its chord structure. There are many online sources that provide lyrics and chord symbols or names to popular music.
