Author studies are both fun and engaging for students! This author study on Chris Van Allsburg provides a great template for students to learn about this author and some of his books. It also addresses some of the Common Core standards.
Chris Van Allsburg has written many books and there is no way a teacher could get to them all. This study allows you to pick and choose books you like or have available to you by giving you a blank template for a wide selection of books.
Included in this study:
--A short computer research activity so students become familiar with the author
--A template for students to write their own “The ‘Z’ Was Zapped” mini story.
--A set template that can be used for any of Chris’s books. (I have included enough for 6 books, but you may adjust your packets for the number of books you wish to include.) The set template includes:
>A story prediction based on the title
>A 4 pane visualization of the story as it is teacher read
>An in-depth analysis chart of the story including: characters, setting, strange events, strong interesting language, change in the characters, and the moral or lesson of the story.
>A window pane for students to create a book cover
>A beginning Double Bubble Map for students to compare and contrast two of Chris’s books.
--A culminating activity with “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick”.
Chris Van Allsburg’s books are filled with many strange events, interesting language, a change of his characters, and a moral or lesson. Students are very insightful when it comes to this analysis and many times will come up with some amazing ideas that even I did not think about. Let them run with it!
