Trying to get your students to understand the deeper meaning in stories? So was I. I compiled a small group work packet for The Stranger and The Wretched Stone. I used it with my advanced third grade readers who could do small group discussions, analyzing and writing a few times a week without the need for a teacher to guide them every step of the way.
They worked in pairs or in groups of 3 AFTER READING to find clues, discuss ideas and questions I posed in the packets and best of all....dig deeper to figure out characters and learn about symbols.
This led to some great "book club" or "literature circles" when I pulled them back with me to discuss what they had done.
