Skit 8: Dr. Rubenstein Considers Giants
In a series of ten lessons, Christian Skits address science from the standpoint of Christian values. Scientists today have discovered a link between gigantism and the pituitary gland.
Dr. Rubenstein, or “Dr. R.” as he is known to young Joey, teaches the value of understanding not only the physical side of gigantism, but also the psychological side of it, i.e. why a giant like Goliath might have acted in the way that he did. Then Dr. R. and Joey explore David’s faith as he took a stone and a slingshot and knocked the giant to the ground.
Skit 8 addresses giants – the ones we know about from history and from the Bible – and the ones that haunt us and scare us today. Everyone faces giants at some time or another, and God is still the giant slayer. God doesn’t need the most powerful warrior of all time to kill a giant; he just needs a willing warrior. David believed in the Shepherd to take care of him and protect him. He later wrote about his Shepherd in Biblical verses named Psalms.
The object of these lessons is to present science from a Christian standpoint, and to teach Biblical lessons from a scientific standpoint. The stories of the Bible are not myths – they are real – and it is proper and fitting that they be taught as such.
