What are word ladders? And how will this set of Christmas puzzles extend my students learning? To put it simply, word ladders are word puzzles by which you change one word into another through a series of steps, creating new words along the way, changing them one letter at a time.
Word ladders, also known as doublets, were created by author Lewis Carroll. Lewis claimed to have invented the game on Christmas day in 1877. The first mention of the game in Carroll's diary was on March 12, 1878, which he originally called "Word-links”. .
Word ladders are an excellent way for students to stretch their vocabulary while also
practicing their spelling skills.
