: This English/bilingual (Spanish-English) activity packet about Las Posadas in Mexico fits perfectly in a unit on Christmas around the world, or stands alone as a Hispanic culture lesson on Las Posadas.
The story of Las Posadas, which is an event commonly celebrated in Mexico, is described and pictured through a ten-page bilingual Spanish-English version minibook. These full-sized pages can be used individually and/or stapled together to make a complete book about Las Posadas. As kids color beautiful illustrations based on traditional Mexican ceramics, they learn about the different aspects of the event. This packet also includes background information for teachers and parents, and a great book list for further classroom or home reading.
I have used this in both ESL classes, as well as ELA classes as a multicultural lesson. Professionally illustrated and written by a native Spanish speaker, this minibook is an exceptional activity that you won't find anywhere else. It includes:
1. Background Information:
Teachers can learn about Las Posadas with this helpful, authentic background and cultural information, and help introduce students to this holiday using the provided book list.
2. Word Wall Words:
Vocabulary Cards for Pocket Chart. Display and introduce the vocabulary from the lesson in your pocket chart, and keep it up throughout the lessons for reference.
3. Fill in the Blanks:
Students will read the sentences, and fill in the blank using the vocabulary words in the word bank. This serves as both vocabulary practice, and a cultural learning opportunity.
4. Match the Foods:
Students will color and cut out the pictures of the special food served during Las Posadas, and then paste them in the boxes below the names of the foods.
5. Word Search:
Find the vocabulary words in the word search, and practice reading and spelling.
Students will have fun finding their way through the Las Posadas maze!
We have included two versions of the “Las Posadas” minibook. One version of the minibook is written only in Spanish, and would be best used for native speakers, or advanced-level language learners. The second version of this minibook is written in English and Spanish, and can be used for any students from beginners to intermediate. Both minibooks explain background information, traditions, and contemporary cultural practices introducing “Las Posadas” as celebrated in Mexico.
