The Christmas celebrations in Sweden begin on December 13. This is Saint Lucia Day, to honor St. Lucia, who is the Saint of Light. Sweden is a country in the far north, so winter is long and dark. This holiday reminds people that light will again return. Early in the morning, the children gather for a procession to bring breakfast in bed to the parents. The oldest girl in the family leads the procession, with the others following. She wears a white dress and an evergreen crown with candles on her head. The younger brothers wear pointed white "star caps" on their heads. They serve buns and hot chocolate to the parents.
