Poem: 500 Scarves for Christmas
This poem is about a school doing a special scarf making Christmas project for their community. Everyone in every grade helped to tie 500 scarves which were then given to community neighbors in need of a warm gift. There is something amazing that happens in a school (or in any organization for that matter) when everyone works together to make and give something to someone else. Something they never asked for, but something each one surely needs. This poem is followed by a few comprehension and reflective questions, as well as a picture to draw. We made a colorful, creative bulletin out of the students' drawings, which we framed around a copy of the poem. We also added to the bulletin board our ideas for other projects we could do that would help our community neighbors. We titled the board, "Christmas Giving." It made us think a lot and prompted some excellent classroom discussions.
Poem: Start The Ripple
Here is a gentle poem about the lovely contagious nature of sharing and showing kindness and the beautiful difference it can make in building an encouraging environment. The poem is followed by 10 questions, and an opportunity to draw a picture. Hopefully this poem will inspire your class to start kindness ripples. We created a bulletin board centered around this poem and our creative drawings. We added pictures we found of people showing kindness, as well as pictures of us starting kindness ripples at school and in the community.
Sheet Music: I Love The Love At Christmastime
Very short, very simple sheet music with guitar chords
A new Christmas song, very short and simple, with an important message of sharing the gift of love and kindness with our neighbors. My students love to sing this song, and we always sing it twice. From making hundreds of fleece scarves for the Red Cross and others, to coloring placemats for the homeless shelter's Christmas dinner, to collecting gently used kids' coats and jackets for the Mission, to creating seasonal artwork for for the residents' doors at a nearby nursing home, our students love to serve our neighbors and this little song captures that love.
7 Community Service Ideas:
"Service leads to compassion" is an effort that encourages elementary-aged students to see the needs of others and then do something to help. One Arts Infusion Collaborative has, for many years, nurtured character education through serving neighbors in our community. This product shares a service experience, a service theory, and seven simple service projects we regularly do with elementary students. Always call an organization and ask about their needs before you begin a service project.
One Arts Infusion Collaborative seeks to create original poetry and music that support and enhance curricular content, celebrate holidays and other special days, stir imaginations, help build meaningful connections to learning, and nurture a passion for caring for and serving our neighbors.
