Description
After reading "A Christmas Carol", keep your middle school students engaged while analyzing how Dickens both used and altered history which influenced his characters' perspectives with this easy to use, NO PREP digital (and printable) Escape Activity!
I used this escape activity to:
1. Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place or characters and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history.
2. Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.
3. Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.
4. Impress my administrator who rated me as "innovating" in two areas during my observation as a result!
This resource comes with both digital puzzles & paper puzzles but all the "locks" are digital!
This Google Form and Slides resource includes:
★ Digital "locks"!
★ Directions and links to share on any learning management system
★ Digital answer sheet and puzzles for students
★ Printable answer sheet and puzzles (In case you need it for students with an IEP or 504 plan.)
★ Three "doors" (puzzles) - one for how Dickens used history, one for how Dickens changed history and one for how his uses and alterations of history influenced character perspectives using claims and evidence.
★ Full Answer Keys
The first puzzle is an "easy win" to be sure and get all your students engaged. But don't worry, each puzzle gets a little bit harder as the student progress. That being said, these puzzles took my students 2 class periods to fully complete. As students "escaped", I gave them their reward - a small candy cane - but you can use whatever reward suits you and your class! (Candy canes are not included.)
I hope this helps you wrap up your unit on A Christmas Carol!
