Build your students’ understanding of main idea and details and character traits with these seasonal graphic organizers and writing activity.
- 4 character graphic organizers (Santa Claus, elf, reindeer, and gingerbread man) with 2 versions each (with and without writing lines). Students will write a main idea to tell who the character is and draw or write 4 details that support the main idea. Example - Main idea: He is Santa Claus. He has a red suit. He likes cookies. He brings toys. I sat on his lap.
- Blank graphic organizers for students to create and describe their own character.
- Writing sheet for students to draw their character, write the main idea, and write sentences to describe their details.
- Cut and paste sort to describe Santa Claus, elf, and reindeer.
Making Inferences Activity—Have students read their details aloud from their writing sheet, without stating their main idea or showing their illustration. Have other students make inferences to figure out the student’s character (main idea). Engaging practice for partner work, small groups, or whole group!
