I use this activity as part of our "Christmas Around the World" cultural celebration unit. It is also a great review of ordinal numbers! After reading the book "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and listening to the song, we create our own "updated" version in a class book. Each student is asked to choose a number (depending on how many students you have, you may want to do two class books 1-12). Then, they create a page using their number and choose a "gift" to give the class. For example "On the first day of Christmas, John gave to me, one teddy bear". This is a great way to see if kids can associate the ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) with their matching cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3). It's also tons of fun to read the finished books again and again with the class!
