I have used this Christmas tree for years during the weeks before winter break to help motivate the students to be prepared and be respectful and always have great results.
For this "game" there is a list of goals. The slide currently has:
- all assignments in
- all prepared for class
- quiet when needed
- respectful students
- transition quickly
but you can modify it to meet the needs of your class.
For each class session, at the end we evaluate and for each goal met, the symbol is dragged over to decorate the tree.
You can set a goal for the number of items on the tree, have the students set their own goal, or have classes compete against each other. It is a very flexible tool.
Also, it is important to note that before starting, an environment of respect and encouragement must be established. It is vital that a student who forgets his or her homework is encouraged and helped instead of brought down by this activity.
