Not sure how to teach young learners how to Write the Room, but you want to get them up and moving? Then this series was created with the needs of your class in mind.

Traditional Write the Room cards have numbers or letters on them so that the learner will know where to place their answers on the response sheet. With young learners, however, this is a step they often miss. Their responses are either in the wrong place or they are bewildered by the process and keep interrupting your group teaching time to make sure they have the right location.

With this series of Write the Room cards, placement in not important. That’s because the cards and worksheets are not numbered. They can’t respond in the wrong location; there is only one place for them to mark.

The focus of this resource is on counting objects 1-5. Included are four sets of ten cards to which young learners will refer to match the objects with the correct numerals on their recording pages. Two recording sheets are provided for each set to allow for differentiation.

Laminate, cut out and post the card set at various locations around the room. If you use mini-clipboards in your classroom, you can adjust the Adobe Reader setting on your printer to print two copies to a single page. Alternatively, these cards may be placed into a container for use at a learning center.

There are four sets of cards included in this resource:

  • Counting with a five-frame
  • Counting pips 1-5 on a die
  • Counting shapes 1-5
  • Counting fingers 1-5

Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
