Put numbers to Santa Claus’ improbable Christmas Eve flight! Use unit conversions and scientific notation to calculate data such as how many presents Santa will deliver per hour and how many calories Santa will consume throughout the night. Help your high school science students think analytically about the magic of Christmas!

This is an excellent activity to assign on one of the days before Christmas break.

Students should have prior knowledge of unit conversions and dimensional analysis. Though not absolutely necessary, ability to write numbers in scientific notation would be beneficial. Since the calculations will produce large numbers, this would be a great time to practice and reinforce students’ ability to write numbers in scientific notation.

Students will quantify aspects of Santa’s Christmas Eve flight in three categories:

• Loading up Santa’s Bag

• Delivering the Presents

• Santa’s Health

Included in this resource:

• Student worksheet (3 pages, with white space for students to show the work for the problems)

• Answer key (3 pages, showing all of the steps to solve each problem)

• Teacher instructions (1 page with general thoughts about running and helping students with the activity)

All pages are .pdf format for easy printing and formatting consistency.

This activity, with class discussion, should easily fit into one 40-minute class period. Students could complete this activity individually, but I think it would be more fun for them to work on it in pairs or small groups. It’s Christmas, after all! And I think you’ll have fun hearing their conversations with each other about the numbers.

Bring some Christmas cheer into your science classroom!
