Christmas Expand the Sentences! December - Literacy Centers - Adding details ---
Have your students expand each sentence by adding details. Encourage your students to add details to describe how things look including colors and sizes. Also encourage your students to add details describing who, what, where, when, how, and why.
This 21 page pack has a picture at the top of each page and one sentence for students to expand. Students will write on the lines to show their expanded sentence. The pictures included will help students add details to their sentence.
**Here are some examples for expanding this sentence: I see the boy.
I see the boy pulling a wagon with a big Christmas tree in it.
I see the boy with a Santa hat pulling a red wagon.
I see the boy with a Christmas tree to take home to decorate.
These are just three examples of ways to expand this sentence. The possibilities are endless. Let your students have fun with this activity.
These pages are great for a daily language arts activity. You can show the picture and let students share/discuss ways to expand the sentence by adding details. Then the teacher can choose one of their ideas to expand and write it on chart paper or on the board as a whole class or have individual students complete the page with their own ideas.
Expanding each sentence also recaps beginning sentences with capital letters and including ending punctuation. These activities are great for morning work, literacy centers, or for quick mini lessons on including details to expand sentences, capital letters and ending punctuation. Students like to see their baby sentences grow. When your students learn how to include details, you will see their writing grow leaps and bounds.
