Product Description
This fraction project is an activity your students will treasure for years and makes an excellent hallway or bulletin board display!

In this project based learning activity, students create a Christmas Village to help Santa and his elves. The only catch is that each building in the village is represented by different fractions. This can be an elaborate (yet no prep) project that can take multiple days to complete, or some portions may be omitted for a one or two day activity.

What's included?
There are three versions in this project:
-Version 1-Each building in Christmas Village is outlined with a given number of square units, so students will NOT have to multiply fractions. Instead, students will use equivalent fractions to design Christmas Village.

-Version 2-Students will multiply a whole number by a fraction to determine the size of each building in Christmas Village. In this version, 24 square units represent a whole. After students draw Christmas Village, they may add special details.

-Version 3-In this version, students are given a detailed picture of different parts of Christmas Village. They must use the direction page to color portions of the pictures based on specified fractions.

Extension Ideas
Have students calculate the perimeter of each figure (Versions 1 and 2). You could also have students design irregular shapes, rather than rectangles.

In all versions, students receive a letter from Santa Claus that asks for their help creating a drawing of Christmas Village. Students will receive a directions page and two pieces of graph paper. Students should use a pencil to draw Christmas Village on the grid paper. Once students are happy with their plan, they should outline and label each building. Then, students can show off their creativity by adding details to each of the buildings in Christmas Village.
