These holiday themed science lab activities are the perfect way to celebrate the holidays with your kids before the break! They will practice their science skills and have fun too!
Here are the activities that are included:
Operation: Christmas Chariot: Santa’s reindeer have gone on strike this year and all of the elves are busy making toys! Students will need to design a car that is wind powered using only simple materials given to them. Santa needs to cover a lot of distance in little time so the car that travels the longest distance on one breath of air will win!
Skills and Content: measurement, problem solving, designing and building a structure for a purpose, observation
Cookie Calamity: The elves are at it again! Every year Mrs. Claus bakes Santa’s favourite sugar cookies to fatten him up for the holidays but this year some elves have broken into the kitchen and mixed up the ingredients! Students will need to test various ingredients to figure out what is what.
Skills and Content: scientific method, recording data in tables, observation, drawing conclusions
Inky Inkling: This is a continuation of the “Cookie Calamity”. The naughty little elf who made the mess also left a note! Students will use chromatography to find the culprit!
Skills and Content: chromatography, observation, diagramming
Christmas Tree Ornaments: Students will be making Borax crystal ornaments. This lab will teach students about crystallization and they will get a take-away tree ornament!
Skills and Content: measurement, solubility, crystallization, observation
Let it Snow: It just isn't Christmas without a little snow! Students will make “snow” using a few simple ingredients. This is a great station to use for younger students or as a station for students who are waiting to move to another station.
