Welcome to this fun and engaging "Who Done it” for the holidays! Students will hear a story of Christmas chaos occurring in the North Pole. They will be hired by the Claus’ to help solve the mystery and save Christmas!
There are three separate but related activities to this mystery. Below is a brief overview of each activity.
Santa has been having some troubles with a few of his elves but he never thought it would come to this! A mischievous elf has hidden all of the harnesses for the reindeer! The rest of the elves are too busy making toys to help and the reindeer cannot pull the sled without their magical harnesses! Students will help design and engineer a wind-powered sleigh to help save the day!
Skills and Content: STEM, measurement, problem-solving, designing and building a structure for a purpose, observation, cooperative learning
The naughty elf strikes again! Every year Mrs. Claus bakes Santa’s favorite sugar cookies to fatten him up for the holidays but this year a naughty little elf (based on the footprints left in the baking powders- a size 2!) has broken into the kitchen and mixed up the baking ingredients! Students will need to test various ingredients to figure out which is which.
Skills and Content: scientific method, recording data in tables, observation, drawing conclusions, problem-solving, cooperative learning
The naughty little elf who made the mess in the kitchen also left a note that we can use as evidence! Using a technique called chromatography, students will determine which marker wrote the note.
Skills and Content: chromatography, observation, diagraming, cooperative learning, problem-solving.
