This 'Christmas Holidays Around the World' is a fun way to learn about Christmas traditions around the world.
It explores ten countries including: USA, England, Australia, Japan, China, Germany, Sweden, Finland, France and Russia.
To start the unit students are invited to earn their ticket on Santa's Sleigh to magically explore a range of countries. You can easily adjust your visits to how ever many countries you want to include.
Students are issued with a special passport and they will earn stamps depicting a child as they learn about each country. (Available to print in color or BW)
There are information cards for each country, that can be printed for learning centre activities or displayed on an IWB.
Printable student book - Students can create their own book for their trip by completing a simple cloze and creating a stamp for each of the country traditions.
What I did for my first graders was to set the scene by having a mystery box. In the mystery box I place an item to represent each country. (Shoe, police man, Swedish heart basket, candy cane, apple, Santa, chicken drum stick, fan, Christmas cracker and stocking). We started with the more random items to see what we were going to learn about and brainstormed ideas) It made an interesting discussion.
Then I introduced the poster and the idea of going around the world in Santa's sleigh. Wow, did I have them now. They had to earn their ticket (what an incentive). I issued them with a passport because you really need one to travel the world. I got them to draw their picture in the first box.
Students visited a country by reading the printed cards for their country and then the completed the page in their booklet. A cloze activity and to draw a picture to represent the country's tradition. I also asked them to tell me one thing that they had found out about the tradition. Then they earned a stamp for their passport. They instantly wanted to go to another country. What a hit.
Students can also make their own stamp for each country or they can colour in the included country stamps.
There are also simple worksheets to compare countries, match greeting and alphabetical order. See below for full content details.
