Solving math word problems is more engaging when there is an interactive puzzle aspect. With this problem solving activity, the children have to identify the operation needed to solve the problem, categorise it according to multiplication or division and then solve and explain their answers.
There are 24 differentiated word problems ( cards 1-6 are easier than 19-24) focusing on multiplication & division skills ideally suited for higher level 3rd, as well as 4th and 5th grades, with multi-step problems also.
The problems require the children to solve the equations mathematically but also to be able to explain their answer, and so insists that there must be the ability to verbalise the concepts involved. This is a great way to have the children reflect upon their own learning and understanding of the concepts taught within these math strands and standards.
This 10 page packet can simply be printed and put to great use as a review, homework practice or laminated and used as math centres task cards. An answer sheet is provided.
For guided groups, I like to have the children cut and glue the photocopied sheet into their notebooks with space to really reflect upon their answers and write their explanation below the problem.
If you like these holiday activities, you will find more Sort n’ Solve packets with a Thanksgiving and Winter theme in my store and on my blog.
