Not only could your students use playdough to make sentences, they could also use letter tiles, magnetic letters or other alphabet mediums that you already use in your classroom.


Your 57 page file includes:

★ 59 x Christmas themed vocabulary cards (4 to a page).

★ Christmas themed vocabulary chart (3 pages) with all 59 vocabulary words and pictures.

★ 13 x I can make a sentence play dough mats for 13 different basic sentence structures

★ 2 x differentiated record sheets for students to finish after making a sentence on their play dough mat.


Teachers slowly introduce the school vocabulary cards in context, in relation to real-life, books and other written formats.

Teachers model how to read basic structures by constructing sentences using the vocabulary cards.

Children need to be shown how to access the vocabulary cards or charts and use them or other words from around the room to finish the sentence on a mat. Teachers model how to make letters and words with play dough.


Students then finish one of the two differentiated record sheets.

★ Record sheet variation 1 – Teachers might like to laminate the record sheets and invite students to use a dry erase marker (whiteboard marker) for a more process orientated approach. This may be appropriate for reluctant writers or for interventions.

★ Record sheet variation 2 - The laminated record sheets could also be used for fast finishers when provided in a box with markers and an old sock or erasers to wipe off.
