Students create a list of items they would like for Christmas/Hanukkah/Holiday/Birthday etc. Then they estimate the cost of each item. Once this is complete, the students use available technology (computer, cellphone, tablet, etc.) to determine that actual price of an item. Students compare the prices by determining the difference between their estimate and the actual cost of the item. Last, the students answer whether they were surprised by the actual cost of their desired item(s). There are great extension opportunities for this handout. Students could be asked to determine the total cost of all of their items or students could be asked to find the lowest price of a particular item. Students could be asked to determine how many hours working for a rate of $____/hour would they need to work in order to pay for the items on their list.
