This is a great Christmas listening/comprehension activity to complete with your class during the holiday season. There are various levels which is perfect if you teach different ages or have to differentiate. These activities are a fantastic resource in an ESL classroom but also work well with younger students in preschool or primary/elementary school. There are enough sets of instructions to do this activity multiple times with your class.
Teacher can ask the questions or give students the instructions to complete activity by themselves or in pairs/small groups.
Main vocabulary: Christmas tree, Santa, elf, reindeer, sleigh, wreath, holly, mistletoe, candle, angel, star.
- Teacher instructions
- Listen and draw: Pair work (6 versions)
Divide students into pairs. Student A describes the pictures to student B. Student B draws the pictures on their worksheet.
- Listen/Read and draw: Easy/Intermediate (12 sets of instructions)
Teacher asks students to draw Christmas pictures e.g. Draw a Christmas tree/wreath/Santa's Sleigh. Some instructions relate to the story of Jesus' birth/nativity scene.
Examples of instructions: Draw a reindeer. / Draw something a reindeer eats. / Draw a gift one of the wise men brought to Jesus.
- Listen/Read and draw/write: Advanced (4 sets of instructions)
Students have to draw pictures or write answers to questions related to Christmas.
