I love this unit because it is like a big Common Core review, dressed up and disguised as a really fun Christmas unit. With the focus on the holiday season, it's really neat to be able to coordinate some of the student's energy into activities that extend their learning too.
I really like the worksheets included. I researched and wrote original pieces that are focused on key Common Core concepts but have really fun holiday themes like reindeer, holly, Christmas Trees and more. These are topics that kids will find engaging.
The "My Family's Christmas Traditions" writing pages are great to use in December for a paragraph writing activity, whether it is one paragraph or five paragraphs. So many kids celebrate Christmas and have family traditions that they observe, that you probably won't have too many kids who are "stuck" without anything to write about. That's always a good thing!
Poetry is always a great way to incorporate writing throughout the year. The acrostic poem included is open-ended so kids can choose any word they would like to highlight. It might be Christmas or Santa Claus or even Gingerbread! The number poem is also open-ended and can be either a countdown or a count up from 1 – 10 or 10 – 1. Kids brainstorm phrases to go with each number. Easy and fun!
I really love the craftivity and have done these snow globes for many years with my students. I tell them that except for tiny details like animal faces or a person's eyes, they need to cut everything out from paper scraps. This is a great time to use some of those odds and end papers and the snow globe projects do turn out so well. I like to bring in a few of my own snow globes to use as examples and we talk about the kinds of things that might be "snow globe worthy". I tell the kids too that whatever they decide to put into their snow globe will end up as part of their creative story, so they should choose something they would like to write about. The stories turn out really well and I like to send these home with the snow globes as I know they will be loved by their parents too.
And the task cards...one of my favorite activities to do in the classroom. Kids love it and I do too. Great concentrated learning that is fun!
Christmas can be a crazy time at school but my hope is that this unit will help you make it a really great time of fun and learning for your students. There are enough materials here to keep your kids busy (in a good way) for the entire month.
If you'd like to integrate social studies with language arts, this Christmas Around the World for Older Kids is another rigorous but fun set of activities
