This literacy unit includes CCSS-aligned literacy lessons and materials for 10 popular children's Christmas books, including
•A Christmas Carol (illustrated children's version)
•Uncle Vova's Tree (Patricia Polacco)
•The Christmas Crocodile
•Home for Christmas (Jan Brett)
•The Wild Christmas Reindeer (Jan Brett)
•The Amazing Christmas Extravaganza
•The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy
•How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Lesson plans are one page each and include higher-order questions, student-friendly objectives, materials needed, and steps. I intentionally tried to incorporate language and writing in each lesson, as well. Skills covered in lessons include summarizing, context clues, drawing conclusion, and a little bit of fact/opinion. Also, several writing pieces are included with rubrics! There is also a reindeer research project included to go along with the book "The Wild Christmas Reindeer!"
Six non-fiction articles are included with test-prep questions for comprehension centers, small group, extended work, or centers! Topics range from the history of the Christmas tree to St. Lucia's Day and Bing Crosby!
Literacy centers cover the skills of synonyms and antonyms with a tree ornament match-up, parts of speech tic-tac-toe, affix trains, author's purpose, and summarizing.
I have also included the novel study "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," as well as my "Merry Math-mas Centers" resource, which includes several holiday-themed math centers as a bonus covering graphing, place value, rounding, and multiplication! (These two resources are more geared for third graders.)
I hope you enjoy this resource! If you have any questions, please let me know! Thank you for visiting my store!
