In this Lockbox Challenge, students will need to break into a box to save Christmas. Santa Claus took a vacation to Christmas Island and has lost his cell phone in the sand. Without his phone, he has completely lost track of time and is about to miss his return flight home to pack his sleigh on Christmas Eve. The only way to save Christmas is to call Santa's hotel and send a reminder message. The problem is that the hotel name and phone number are locked in the box!

There are 6 different challenges included in this resource. Each task will require logical reasoning and critical thinking skills. All the printable materials for each task are included, with an easy-to-read reference sheet that outlines the lock codes and setup for each challenge. The following challenges are included:

1. 12 Days of Christmas- Students must recognize the 12 visual representations of the 12 Days of Christmas song and place cards in order according to the lyrics. Once the cards are placed in the correct sequence, letter clues on the back will reveal the secret location of the hidden key.

2. Zippy's Toy Challenge- Students will identify and extend a number pattern that doubles. Then they will divide and subtract to find a number code that will unlock a small box containing a UV flashlight.

3. Gift Bag Logic- Kitty Cat pulled tags off the gift bags! Students will use clues to determine the gift and gift bag for four people. They will use this information to find and unscramble letters to make a code for the 5-letter word lock.

4. Holiday Faces Problem- Students will solve a complex math problem involving addition and 2-digit multiplication. The final solution will open the 4 digit number lock.

5. Present Maze- Students will find two paths through a maze that will cross the finish line at the number 20. Then they will use the UV flashlight to read an invisible ink message that will give a clue about how to use one of the paths to open the directional lock.

6. Candy Cane Hunt- Students will decipher a secret message. Once the code is deciphered, they will know where to find four hidden letters in the room. Those four letters will spell out a word that opens the 4-letter lock.

Answer keys are included for each challenge.

The initial setup of a Lockbox Challenge is a bit of a time investment, but I have worked hard to make it as easy as possible for you with detailed directions that include pictures. Once the challenges are set up and the locks are in place, you will be amazed by the level of engagement, degree of teamwork, and problem solving that unfolds. This makes it all worth while. :-)

Reward certificates (in black line or color) are included to place inside the box.
