Product Description
Students will love the Christmas themes in this, 15 student-page, print and go packet, while practicing both decimal computation and writing algebraic expressions. Themes include Reindeer training camp, Mrs. Claus’ kitchen, Santa’s vacation and the Elves’ workshop. This math packet is designed for 4th-6th grade common core standards that include writing algebraic expressions/equations and using them to solve real-life problems, place value problems, and problems students use decimal operations to solve. Students will love the challenging questions that make them think and conceptualize the common core state standards.

If students run out of time and cannot complete the packet before Christmas, the last five pages, “Santa’s Vacation” would be appropriate as a January theme.

This packet is included in both color and black and white. The black and white copy uses clip art that will print beautifully for students to color their own packet. We made the pictures a little larger and the images are clear. This will save you ink and makes a nice student activity as Winter Break approaches.

Possible Uses in the Classroom

Many pages can be used as performance tasks as well, or as formative assessments. Doing these with our students allowed us many opportunities to check in with them to ensure understanding. It was a great way for students to work at their own pace, and differentiation came naturally, as we were able to do daily one-on-one and small group teaching, while the rest of the class was happily engaged in the project. This happened authentically, and we repeatedly had opportunities to teach and reteach for individual needs. There were countless "ah ha" moments...a teacher's favorite sound! This makes an excellent packet for early finishers, as well as, for homeschool students
of various ages or grades.

Our students love working in these packets! They find them to be engaging and especially fun to work on in pairs or small groups. Because it includes practice in CCSS standards for grades 4-6, this packet is entirely appropriate for all three grades and can be used in many different ways!

Performance assessment(s)
Review for unit test or state tests
As early finisher challenge work
As enrichment
For an independent small group
For home school study
As a whole class project –because many of the problems are designed for multiple solution paths, the problems provide a great opportunity for students to share how they approached the problem and arrived at a solution.
