Your students are sure to be engrossed in this Christmas math activity for fraction and decimal operations. Students will practice decimal and fraction operations as they move through 8 steps to planning a cookie platter!

*There is no actual baking or cooking involved in this activity!*

Will your students be able to stay within their budget?

Will they choose Family Favorite recipes or go upscale with Gourmet Bites?

They will need to adjust their recipes so there are enough cookies to fill the platter?

This is a really fun low-prep activity that cleverly disguises a TON of practice with fraction and decimal operations!

In terms of format, you have many choices for this activity.

  • Hang the cards around the room and have students work their way through the steps as a math center.
  • Project the cards onto a whiteboard and complete the activity whole group.
  • Choose 1 card each day and complete the activity for morning work as a class over the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.
  • Laminate all cards and put them onto a binder ring. Students can grab the whole activity and complete it at their own pace.

This activity is very easy to differentiate. Ask students to move through the basic activity or make the exercise more difficult by putting additional stipulations in place such as getting as close to their budget as possible or having a competition to see who can spend the least... or the most!
