Have your students practice adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals with a real world activity. This unique "menu" style activity follows a story of a family shopping for items needed in their Christmas Eve traditions. This is geared toward 5th grade common core standards, but also for 6th grade as well as high level 4th grade.
Students will be given a grocery list along with a page of store items with prices. They will need to calculate the cost of the items, along with sales tax and figure out if the family has enough money for the items. They end up going over budget and must use coupons to bring their price total down so that they can pay for their Christmas Eve items. They must find the deduction for each coupon and apply this along with their new sales tax to find their new total.
There are also some short answer questions about the activity provided.
