What educators are saying
Description
Use these Christmas Music activities to help build sight-reading skills during your December music lessons! The activities are designed to reinforce students' understanding of rhythm and pitch through engaging in these sight-singing exercises. Works well for in-person and online lessons.
PRINTABLE OR DIGITAL:
These activities come in 2 different formats.
1. PRINTABLE FORMAT
- Print off the student's response pages.
2. DIGITAL TPT EASEL FORMAT
- There is also a digital version using TpT's Easel digital tool. These activities can be assigned in Google Classroom or with a link.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
- THREE class activities based on Christmas Carols
- Teacher notes and ANSWER KEYS
ACTIVITY 1 Sing the Christmas Carol
The activity aims for each student to find another in the class who can sing a section of a Christmas Carol named on the worksheet sheet. The section of the Carol required is determined by you, the teacher (i.e. ten words, the chorus, the verse etc.)
When they find a student who can sing the required section of a carol, they have them sign the Christmas decoration on their worksheet.
I have included a copy of the Christmas Carol Search Sheet without Carol titles so teachers can write in titles of their choice.
ACTIVITY 2 Name the Christmas Carol
A two-bar excerpt of a well-known Christmas Carol is given. Students are to identify the Carol and write the name of the Carol in the space provided in the Christmas ornament.
ACTIVITY 3 Find the matching parts of the Christmas Carol
A four-bar excerpt of a Christmas Carol has been chopped in half in this activity. Students are to match up the two halves of each Carol, name it and notate the correct four bars on the treble stave provided.

WHAT TEACHERS HAVE SAID:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I love having these extra activities to help build skills during the month of December! Works good in person or online lessons" (Thank you, Pamela)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "These were fun to use in music class and also as an activity as we worked on our Christmas program for those not involved in all of the program." (Thank you, Diane)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Fun way to incorporate Christmas carols and songs in the classroom. I appreciate the inclusion of sacred Christmas carols as I teach at a Christian school! Good for sight reading, and using piano students in the classroom to play the excerpts. Thank you!!!" (Thank you, Margaret)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I found I could do this activity with 3rd grade also if we reviewed the sang through the Christmas carols before we started. Students loved it! After students got all their signatures, I helped them with the second and third activity. Reading the notes to figure out the pieces was difficult. Creative activity!!" (Thank you)
