4 levels of rhyming activities to support an altered Christmas version of Down by the Bay. Lots of visuals to support ELLs and Special Needs students.
These activities help embrace the fun of Christmas and reinforce rhyming skills in a musical manner. In addition, you know you are supporting your student's learning because oral language is such an important prerequisite to developing strong phonemic awareness, reading and writing skills.
Your students will be giggling as they make silly rhymes while singing an altered version of “Down by the Bay”. In this case the lyrics go “North of the pole, where the red candy canes grow, back to my sleigh, I dare not go, for if I do, my reindeer would say...” The visuals that accompany this activity assist exceptional students and English Language Learners with their rhymes and vocabulary. This resource is differentiated and included four levels of difficulty for each activity. Supporting activities to scaffold the rhyming for the lyrics include: mountain letter vocabulary printing with visuals; I Have Who Has card game; and a Syllable Count activity with cards. Extension activities after the song has been completed include: Song Writing Template; Writing Worksheet; and My Reindeer Says Book. These products are great for a gradual release continuum from modelled to independent practice.
