Need a fun writing activity this holiday season? These Frosty News Lessons are a perfect addition to your winter literacy lessons. Students can practice elaborating on a topic with three fun lessons. Lesson plans are included for easy integration into your day. Students will create their own newspaper and snowman to hang out in the hall for the winter season!
Included in this Packet:
Lesson 1 – Newspaper Elaboration Race – Students race each other to read and find the who, what, when, where, and why in a newspaper article. To read more closely, students will reread the article and fill in the work page.
Lesson 2 – Parts of a Newspaper Match Up– Students will learn about the different parts of a newspaper. Hang the different newspaper parts posters around the room. Students will get a headline and decide what poster their headline best fits. Once at the poster, students will discuss why they think their headline belongs there.
Lesson 3 – Interview a Character – Students will choose a character card. There is a headline on the card. Students will work with partners to create dialogue their character might say.
To wrap up the unit, students will write their own newspaper article using the newspaper template. They will then create a snowman that you can hang in the hallway along with the newspaper!
