How to use the printable worksheets:

*Print the 30 inference worksheets, anchor charts and sentence stems. Depending on student background knowledge, age and target skills, select at least one worksheet to start with.

*Teach students the basic concept of inferring using their personal background knowledge, daily events, and cause/effect statements (example: If I see dark clouds, see lightning and hear thunder, then I can infer it is going to start raining). Teach your students the basic formula SCHEMA+(text) EVIDENCE=INFERENCE.

*Have students list anything and everything they know about the topic represented in the black and white photo under (SCHEMA).

*After students brainstorm ideas about baking from their background knowledge, they can list the things they SEE in the photo (EVIDENCE). In this example, they would list: muffins, muffin tin, woman cooking, apron, hand lifting the muffin out of the pan, counter, cookies in the background.

*Using the formula: SCHEMA+EVIDENCE=INFERENCE along with the sentence stems, students SOLVE THE PUZZLE and write an inference statement. “I think ____because____."
