Build comprehension using these 4 high-interest, nonfiction reading passages that feature one page of informational text and one page of multiple-choice comprehension questions. Topics include mistletoe, Christmas songs (Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer), tree decorating around the world, and the history of the Christmas tree. The questions include a variety of reading skills and are modeled after the types of questions on standardized reading tests, but with only 3 answer choices. Fun for reading in December!
Please NOTE that the information presented in all the passages is secular, except for using the word Christmas. Also, I have included the Mistletoe Magic text as the preview so you can see if it's appropriate for your students. It mentions kissing, of course, and the fact that the word mistletoe actually means "poop on a stick." 4th and 5th graders find this hilarious, but it might be too disruptive in a 3rd grade classroom.
The thumbnails and preview show the text and question format. The measured reading levels range from 3rd-5th and are "fairly easy to read" or "average" according to the readability indicators. I have 32 years of experience in preparing students for standardized reading testing and in studying these types of tests.

All of the texts have reading levels in the 5th grade range. I would recommend that 3rd and most 4th grade teachers plan on doing these orally with students while modeling good reading strategies. As an added critical thinking BONUS, have students explain why they think the title of each reading passage was chosen.
