This Christmas-themed beginning addition and decomposition product includes activities in which students cut out & glue red, green, blue, purple, or yellow ornaments on a Christmas tree labeled “Make 4”, “Make 5”, “Make 6”, “Make 7”, or “Make 8”. For each of these sums, two versions of the activity are provided:
• In the first (easier) version, students glue any color combination of ornaments that equals the designated sum. Outlined boxes are provided on the tree to give visual support to students as they “make” the designated number. Under each tree, they write the matching equation by filling in the equation boxes either with numbers only or with the beginning letter of the color and the number. An “ornament color code” box is provided for reference. For instance, if the student glues one yellow ornament and three red ornaments on a “Make 4” tree, it could be represented as:
1Y + 3R = 4
1 + 3 = 4
• In the second, more difficult, version students still have the option of color coding the ornaments as shown above or writing the matching equation with numbers only. However, only one tree with ornament outlines is provided. Students make one equation using ornaments without any gluing, record the matching equation to the right of the tree, then remove those ornaments and create a new equation with a different color combination. This allows for more combinations to be discovered and recorded, but as each new combination is “made” the visual information for the prior equation is gone, requiring more memory and abstract thinking. Younger students are more likely to get “mixed up” if the ornaments are removed and misplaced. Once again, teacher judgment on which method to use will ensure the successful math practice of the students.
The last page of the packet includes 96 ornaments. Depending on the number of pages the students will be completing, each student may need more than one copy of this paper. The ornaments may be “precut” into strips with fewer ornaments to be given out as needed, precut, mounted on cardstock, and laminated to be reused (if using version #2) in a math center, or students may cut their own ornaments and save the unused pieces in a math folder.
Whichever method is chosen, students will have fun manipulating the ornaments to make equations as they build number sense.
