Product Description
"If you haven't got any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble." Bob Hope (American comedian ~ 1903 - 2003)

Christmas is an especially festive time of year in Germany.

Included here are films about Christmas in Germany and Austria and the influence of German traditions on the way we in America celebrate this holiday.

You get:

1. A 14-page overhead with pictures explaining how Christmas is celebrated in Germany (this is also in my 'German Christmas With Rick Steves')

2. 'Christmas In Vienna' with Burt Wolf

3. 'Santa Claus' (A&E Biography with our German-connected traditions)

4. Supplemental classwork or homework review sheets for post-viewing of 'Santa Claus'

5. 'The First Silent Night' hosted by Simon Callow (PBS)

6. 'Taste of Freedom ~ Christmas' with Burt Wolf

7. 'Celebrating Christmas In Germany' with Burt Wolf

Each Film-Fragen sheet has 20 follow-along questions in English that go with the film. These can be used as a substitute lesson plan (or emergency lesson plan), too.

Having students select from multiple choice answers allows more

time for their eyes to stay on the film (and not spend it looking

down writing out answers) and, thus, not miss important

moments in the film.

These films are entertaining and informative, and offer insight into a typical Christmas in the German-speaking countries and our own Christmas customs.

You can show a different one each year to the different levels you teach.

Please note that no DVDs are included with this product, however, your local public library may have them or be able to get them on the interlibrary loan.

Answer keys are provided for all films.

Everything is classroom-ready to make your job easy. (33 pages)

* EXPANSION ACTIVITY 1 *
Some very charming videos have been done by an American teenager during his stay in Germany. Sam Walton has a delightful and refreshing way of looking at 'Life In Germany' - the name of his series.

Here's his video on 'Christmas Cultural Differences'

and

'The Stuttgart Weihnachtsmarkt'
(note the mini-Feuerzangenbowlen).

* EXPANSION ACTIVITY 2 *
Some more delightful videos have been done by Andrew Bossom, an Englishman living in Germany. He has a pleasing and fun way of looking at things, such as ~

'The Meaning of Weihnachten'

'5 Things About German Christmas'

'How To Make Straw Stars'

'Saint Nicholas'

'Happy New Year.'

* For Further Information *

'Weihnachten von A bis Z'.

* OF SPECIAL NOTE *
I have created my products as Word documents because that is how I use them. They are unlocked so teachers can change vocabulary words or modify things if they wish.

If you prefer a different format for the overhead, below are some suggestions, however the pictures may have to be inserted separately.

To Make A Slide Show In ActivInspire
If you use ActivInspire, you can save the Word document as a pdf (this is easily done with the newer versions of Word), then you can simply import the pdf to ActivInspire and have a document for that format.

To Make A Slide Show In PowerPoint
If you prefer to use the PowerPoint format, you can easily convert a Word document to a PowerPoint.

This link explains it clearly: 'Creating A PowerPoint From A Word Document.'
