Christmas Poetry: Longfellow's A French Noel

Christmas Poetry: Longfellow's A French Noel
Product Description
Also known as “A Christmas Carol,” “Noel,” or “I Hear Along Our Street," this poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is a forgotten classic. It is best used in an American Literature class to discuss the Fireside Poets, or as a follow-up to Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing," since the poem is about a series of people that sing Christmas carols. However, it can be used in any literary classroom. The rigor is for high school students, but could possibly work for middle school as well.

This two page worksheet contains the poems, multiple choice vocabulary questions, a proofreading exercise on the author's biography, literary analysis question, and a short answer question asking students to reflect on the tone of the piece.

It is a great assignment for right before Christmas vacation, or as a substitute plan.

The only possibly religious questions are 1.) What are some of your holiday rituals, and 2.) asking students to identify an allusion to Jesus in the manger.
