Christmas Research Project: Give the Gift of Service

Engage your students in the weeks before Christmas; allow them to hone their skills in researching, presenting and writing while they learn the joy of volunteering.

Regardless of their culture or religious affiliation, all students can participate in this activity that asks them to give of themselves to help others while they gain practice in their language arts skills.

Students will reach out to a community program that helps the poor or those in need in some way: a soup kitchen, a food bank, a church group, a woman’s shelter, etc. They will conduct some research, through interviewing, then design a project that will raise money for or help the organization in some way.

They will also be required to complete a presentation and a written assignment that inspires others to help those in need.

Included are step-by-step instructions for both teacher and students, as well as several graphic organizers to help them plan their project and presentation. Rubrics are also included for your assessment of the project.
