Christmas Shopping A Mathematical Challenge simulates Christmas shopping and heightens students’ awareness of the monetary value of gifts, comparison shopping, how to stretch a dollar, and how to purchase items given a limited amount of money to “shop” with. This is a fun classroom activity as well as a family activity. It doesn’t hurt to get the kids started on becoming “savvy shoppers”.
The first step is to make a Christmas gift list for others. Students will get gift ideas and prices while perusing through Christmas sale flyers and ads. They will use the beautifully designed Christmas themed recording sheets (there are 6 different ones) to write the names of the gift recipients, the item that is the gift, and the price.
This product is pretty universal and covers a wide range of ages/grades. That is because the “budgeted amount” for spending and the prices of items to be bought for gifts can be flexible and gauged to the participant’s ages/grades. For instance, if this activity is done with first graders, I would provide sales flyers from discount stores (such as Dollar Stores or Christmas Tree Shops) , give the students a low amount to spend, and have them limit their recipient list to just a few people/pets. On the other hand, 6th graders could work with much higher amounts/numbers and more expensive gifts.
Once the recording sheet is complete, all of the prices are added together. If the cost exceeds the amount given to spend, the student must adjust their list somehow. (number of recipients, change gifts, find better prices for gifts, etc.) If the cost doesn’t exceed the amount given to spend, then the “shopping” is done!
Included are many resources to make one terrific math center! There are 6 different Christmas-themed recording sheets, 10 different decorative “Store Fronts”, decorative dollar & cent signs, gift category lists, and more.
