❅ Christmas Story Starters & Craft:

This packet has lots of common core narrative writing with a familiar theme--with Santa Claus stuck in a chimney.

Watch your kids' imagination spark when they read these humorous starters...all to do with Santa who's stuck in the chimney. There are many variations of the same theme out there...and of the accompanying craft. The patterns for Santa's boots and the chimney (which can also be turned into a fireplace), were hand drawn by me. The patterns are not clip art, but can be used to print, trace, and cut out. Directions are included.

Complete the writing with a fun craft: Santa's boots sticking out of a snow-topped chimney.

Kids write using first person point of view. But each tale starts with a different beginning. The middle and endings are up to your students. There are many opportunities and multiple formats to write tales and personalize their narratives.

Students will see how they can write many different versions of how Santa got stuck in the chimney. Each story version has the same title, but starts with different sentences to help students get a jumpstart in a narrative.

Once the stories are written, students may compare and contrast their characters, problems, solutions, and endings. It is great for multi-age classrooms, varied skill levels and grade levels. Works well for differentiating instruction among individuals within a classroom, or across grade levels.

*Contents*

*4 story starters on half-page cards can be printed on heavy paper, then cut out and laminated for your writing station or literacy center. Suggestion: The cards are great for both oral storytelling as well has for writing. (Color version and black/white version)

*Same 4 story starters --but in a different format--on stationery for kids who want to write directly on the stationery. (black/white for eco-friendly printing)

*20 Transition Words to use as tools for independent writing. These words can be used for additional writing....whether they use these story starters or write from other prompts.

*Pre-writing planner/graphic organizer (using nouns, and a bank of transition and temporal words for narrative writing)

*A fun narrative cloze writing template/frame (fill-in-the-blanks comprehension writing activity) is also included.

*6 extra holiday border stationery with lines (mixed color and black/white outline)

*Craft patterns and complete directions for boots and chimney to cut out or use as templates to make a fun writing display for bulletin boards or take home! You can even use the same chimney pattern to create a "fireplace" and hang paper stockings!

This is an easy way to get everyone storytelling and writing on the same topic or title--making it easy to teach, and model. What fun to see how everyone's story turns out differently!

*This pack aligns with the ELA Common Core Standards for Writing Narratives. {See www.corestandards.org}
