This unit is meant to be a fun, hands-on week of Christmas writing for Kindergarten - 2nd grade. This unit includes five days of interactive writing lessons that teach students about different holiday traditions.
This download includes step-by-step instructions, all templates, as well as a detailed list of holiday reference books.
Day 1: Students will learn about the history of the candy cane. During this lesson students will play the Candy Cane Toss game, create their own candy canes, listen to a story about how the candy cane came to be, and then write about their experiences.
Day 2: Students will learn about the legend of the stocking. After listening to a book about stockings students will weave their own stockings created from the templates provided. They will then decorate their stockings and write about their traditions and share with the class.
Day 3: Students will learn about the tradition of the Christmas tree. Afterwards students will make and/or decorate tree shaped cookies or frosted ice cream cones. Students will then write about the process and share their work.
Day 4: Students will discuss giving and receiving gifts. They will then create "gifts" using an envelope, wrapping paper, and ribbon. Students will write about the gift they have chosen and why.
Day 5: Students will learn about the background of the poinsettias. After reading a book about the plant, students will create their own plants using the templates provided. They will then write about the experience, and share their work.
This writing unit is meant to be fun and encourage descriptive writing by utilizing many hands-on and interactive activities.
