This packet “Christmas Tree Addition” was created with Kindergarten and First grade students in mind. As these little learners have mastered number identification to 20 and are beginning simple math operations, like addition, this activity will definitely come in handy throughout the month of December.
Students can complete this activity independently or with a partner. I like to have my students do this in our “Math with a Buddy” station so they can discuss their thinking and check their work with their partner. It works well as an independent station, too!
This packet focuses on addition with sums to 10 and addition with sums to 20; there are two sets included for differentiated.
To play: Students will choose a number sentence card and place it on the Christmas tree work mat page. They will then use the present counters as manipulatives and place them under the tree to solve the equation. Once they have counted for the total, they will write the complete equation on the recording sheet. An answer key has been provided for students to check their work. They will then clear the work mat of presents and choose a new number sentence to solve.
