In looking to extend matching skills beyond just visual discrimination, I created sight word tasks that start by incorporating matching -- matching a word in color to the same color tree -- and then as your students master that task, you can slowly replace the words in color to words in simple black print to have them get used to the idea of recognizing words and letters that form words. This is a fun game for an independent or guided literacy center. Each strip says "I see a (color) Christmas tree." making this task just a little bit more challenging than simply matching word to picture.
